This is a bhajan attributed to the Vaishnav philosopher, Bhaktivinod Thakur. Traditionally, the 4th line of this bhajan is sung as “Jai Girivar Dhaari,” which translates as “the holder of the great Hill Govardhana.” I learned this chant at my Guru’s little Upper West Side satsang years and years ago, where it was sung often. For some reason, our old chant books showed the lyric as “Jai Krishna Murari,” which refers to Krishna as the slayer of the demon, Mura. So that’s how I learned to sing it like this. I’m not really sure if it was a mistake or just an alternate lyric that was somehow passed on. Purists may be ambivalent, confused or horrified at this alternate rendition I’ve recorded. I’m not sure which. I’ve continued to sing it like this because the lyric resonates with me.
