I’m not sure where I heard this chant first. It may have been with Sri Kirtan’s Ishwari on one of Shyam Das’s Bhajan Boat cruises, or it may been with Nina Rao, who used to sing this at Brooklyn Yoga School quite often. It’s a chant that I’d always enjoyed but never felt compelled to lead, until I found myself on retreat in Vermont with our friends Tracy, Ravi, Lisa, Meryem and others. There was this beautiful river that ran through the back of the property where we were staying and we spent an afternoon on its banks offering bhajans. It seemed important to lead this chant in that moment, and it’s felt important to lead it ever since.
